1. When were you an active member of BI Case Teams and at which campus did you study?
August 2023 – May 2024 at campus Oslo.
2. Why did you decide to join BI Case Teams?
I had previous case competition experience at my home university, and I overheard someone talking about BI Case Teams in the library by chance. I love case competitions and extracurricular activities, so I introduced myself. Being an international student from Australia, I wanted to maximise my time spent abroad and I couldn’t have thought of a better way to do that than immerse myself into a group of likeminded individuals.
3. What was the name of your case team(s) and what did you do to create a good team dynamic?
Stratavision Consulting. I was the only experienced person on the team when we started, so I acted as the guide for teammates. I facilitated discussion, showed them the ropes, and enabled an efficient and collaborative environment. I encouraged those who weren’t as talkative, provided everyone with a platform for their ideas. An open and psychologically safe team is a winning team, regardless of the team’s purpose.
4. Did you have a specific role in your team?
I was the unofficial leader and team facilitator. I was a support person of my teammates and held responsibility of time management. Regarding the case-solving itself I was mostly responsible for the implementation of the solution considering the risks, timelines, and technicalities.
5. Which case competitions did you take part in (national and international)?
I participated in BI National Case Competition (BINCC) 2023 and IE University Business Case Competition (IEUBS) 2024.
6. What is your best memory from your case journey at BI?
Without a doubt it was seeing my teammates’ faces (particularly my teammate John’s) when we won the final at IEUBS. Seeing their faces of sheer joy and accomplishment was the pinnacle of my experience. They had worked so hard and to see their efforts pay off was so rewarding for me.
7. What are your top three takeaways from case training and competitions?
- A collaborative environment and team are KEY. Going into a team expecting to have everything done your way will not, and has never, worked.
- Developing a relationship with your teammates outside of the case comps greatly enables your ability to work with them in the time crunch of a competition.
- Create a solution the judges want, not one you think will be best. Judges are biased and want solutions that meet their needs, not necessarily one that would produce the best overarching outcome.
8. What skills did you learn from participating in case which were relevant to your development/career and how?
Team facilitation, stakeholder analyses, time management, relationship building, public speaking, collaboration, ideation, innovation, risk management, and research.
9. Do you have any advice to students who are curious about BI Case Teams?
It can be daunting to participate or apply yourself, but the rewards far outweigh the initial discomfort. I am so much better off personally and professionally having immersed myself in the world of case comps. If you study, or plan on working with, Business, case comps are going to give you such an advantage in both skill and resume for job applications. Dive in and see what it’s all about.
