Research newsletter 2021

We are putting behind us a year heavily affected by covid-19. Still, a year with excellent performances in teaching and research. In 2021 BI’s faculty have made great efforts in moving our entire teaching enterprise
to a digital format, again and again.

In addition, faculty have published well and received relevant external research funding. Some faculty have been promoted and we have had a record number of new faculty hires as well as record many PhD defences. Congratulations to all for their achievements.

Some highlighs in 2021:

The results of the 2020 Norwegian Scientific Index for publications were finalized in April and BI’s researchers have once again performed very strongly, being credited a total of 456 DHB points, which is a record number. BI’s faculty also had an increase in publication points per faculty, from 1.12 in 2019 to 1.26 in 2020.
We continue to emphasize open access. In the last two years, 95% of BI’s articles have been made openly accessible. 18% in Open Access journals and the rest in our institutional archive, BI Open.
For the first time, we have reported on how research at BI Norwegian Business School has a societal impact, by contributing to policy decisions, business and the society at large. You can find the full report on the webpage we have made with highlights here. The plan is to publish this report every second year.
One of the topics in the report is the analysis and policy advice related to COVID-19 conducted by BI faculty. For this topic we have also developed a specific webpage.
BI continues to attract external research funding. In 2021 we have received funding from the Norwegian Research Council for several projects, and are awaiting results from our applications to the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant scheme in early January.
In 2021 BI established BI Ethics Review Board (ERB) as an offer to all BI’s employees, including PhD students, in need of an ethical review of their research project. This is strongly encouraged.
BI has made a strategic decision to set up a department in Data Science and Analytics. The objective is to strengthen relevant research capacity. BI has also partnered with Simula Research Laboratory to establish a research center. The research center, Simula@BI, was officially opened in November this year.
